Bringing people to art in nature

Pyramid Hill is a 300+ acre sculpture park with 60+ monumental outdoor sculptures displayed in a landscape of rolling hills, meadows, lakes, and hiking trails. The park also features an Ancient Sculpture Museum that displays Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Syrian and Egyptian sculptures dating to 1550 B.C. The Museum Gallery hosts exhibitions by local, regional and national artists. Pyramid Hill is also the only museum you can experience in an Art Cart! Attracting more than 30,000 visitors annually, Pyramid Hill serves as the largest cultural tourist attraction in Butler County.

An enduring holiday tradition

We have been producing our Holiday-LIights-on-the-Hill show for 20 years. In that time we have attracted literally hundreds of thousands of guests. Our unique, 2.5 mile drive through experience is unlike any other show in the Cincinnati / Hamilton  area and is consistently ranked in the media as one of the top holiday attractions in the region.

IN 2018 WE ASKED OURSELVES WHAT WE COULD DO TO BRING THE HOLIDAYS ONE STEP CLOSER TO ANSWERING OUR VISON.

How do we ELEVATE THE HOLIDAY SHOW to inspire and educate our diverse visitors in a world renowned setting of art and nature and be a catalyst for dialog, collaboration, and contemplation?

As a bold new experiment we invited BRAVE BERLIN, the creators of LUMENOCITY and BLINK to come look at the park and dream up something special for the 2018 Holiday Lights on the Hill  show. The result was a complete transformation of our outdoor pavilion into a 13 projector, 180° drive by media experience. It was a hit and a new idea was born.

2019 CALL FOR ARTISTS - SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Pyramid Hill is seeking artists and collaborative groups working in light or electronic media based sculpture to submit concept ideas for our all new holiday drive through experience, BOREALIS. While there are no geographic restrictions for submission, artists from around the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana regions are encouraged to apply. Our unique 2.5 mile drive through experience will be carefully curated and divided into 8 fully conceptualized Zones. Borealis will attract audiences from around the region and will be seen by over 20,000 guests.

general criteria and guidelines

Artists should understand that BOREALIS is a drive-through experience and should consider how their work is viewed from a slow moving car at a distance of 20 to 50 yards. Artists or groups wishing to submit a concept must demonstrate a viable plan to conceive, fabricate, install and maintain their artwork for a period of 6 weeks outside, during the winter months at Pyramid Hill. Proposed projects should be designed with considerations for safety and the needs of an outdoor environment, including inclement weather.

The artist is responsible for the artistic and technical outcomes of the artwork, while the event producers are responsible for securing funding, onsite event insurance, curatorial, technical and material reviews for artistic concepts, to ensure total quality assurance.

award levels

BOREALIS light-based installations will be divided into three tiered budgets* and integrated along the BOREALIS route.** While award levels may be up to $20,000, Pyramid Hill will not be able to fund every project at the high end of this range.

  • TIER 1 - Tier 1 supports budgets between $15,000 - $20,000. Up to 5 works will be selected for this tier.

  • TIER 2 - Tier 2 supports budgets between $5,000 - $10,000. Up to 10 works will be selected for this tier.

  • TIER 3 - Tier 3 supports budgets up to $5,000. Up to 20 works will be selected for this tier.

*If projects are self-funded or have underwriting outside of BOREALIS, please indicate this in your proposal.

**Locations, the number of awards and award amounts are subject to change based on availability of funds.

*The budget categories listed are per Pyramid Hill’s expenses and should include all fees for labor (design and fabrication), all materials, (light) equipment, installation, de-installation, engineering services and testing needed to produce your artwork.

Artists are responsible for all shipping costs, travel and accommodations. The park will provide artists with a location and power for their exhibit.

BOREALIS will not provide additional funds for unforeseen costs in the development and production phase. For this reason, we ask that budgets be specific and realistic. If the artwork requires a budget beyond that which is provided by the event, the artist is welcome to seek and propose accompanying sponsorship. Artists should indicate the contribution of sponsors in their submissions.

In general, private sponsors will not be given recognition in BOREALIS communications unless a specific agreement is made. Sponsorship agreements are limited to individuals or entities which do not conflict with any of the pre-existing event sponsors.

For proposals that are selected for BOREALIS, Pyramid Hill and Brave Berlin, reserve the right to reproduce images of selected artists’ work for printed or internet communications and publicity, catalogues, maps, and other marketing purposes.
